Grand Palace architecture in short
The Grand Palace is not one building. It is a group of halls, residences and temple structures that grew over several reigns, starting with the move of the capital in 1782. Its most famous hall, the Chakri Maha Prasat, combines a European-influenced base with Thai roofs and gilded spires.
Most visitors see the palace from the courtyards and the outside of the halls. Some of the buildings can be viewed from the grounds only, and the Dusit Maha Prasat is closed for normal sightseeing. If you would rather have the buildings explained as you walk, look at Grand Palace tours with a guide.

The throne halls compared
What each group of buildings is and what to plan for in 2026.
| Building | Style and age | Visitor access |
|---|---|---|
| Chakri Maha Prasat | European-influenced base, Thai roofs, gilded spires; main hall built 1876โ1882 under Rama V | Plan to see it from outside; follow the current visitor route |
| Dusit Maha Prasat | Cross-shaped plan, Thai style; built under Rama I | Closed for normal sightseeing |
| Phra Maha Monthien group | Older residence group with Chakraphat Phiman, Phaisan Thaksin and Amarin halls | Check the current visitor route |
| Wat Phra Kaew | Royal chapel of the palace, with murals in the cloisters | Included in the palace ticket |
For most visitors, the most useful part of an architecture visit is the exterior of the Chakri Maha Prasat and the cloisters of Wat Phra Kaew. Do not plan your day around entering a particular hall.

Chakri Maha Prasat: Thai roofs on a European base
The main hall was built between 1876 and 1882 under King Rama V. The base follows a European style, and the roofline above it is Thai, with three gilded spires. That mix makes it easy to recognise from across the courtyard.
Whether you can enter depends on the visitor route on the day. Check the route when you enter, and treat the exterior as the sure thing.

Dusit Maha Prasat and the older halls
The Dusit Maha Prasat has a cross-shaped plan in Thai style and was built under King Rama I. It was traditionally also used for lying in state. It is closed for normal sightseeing, and visitor routes have changed since 21 February 2026.
The Phra Maha Monthien group is older still. It includes the Chakraphat Phiman, Phaisan Thaksin and Amarin halls. Tradition holds that a king spends a night there after the coronation. Treat these as architecture to read from the outside, not as an indoor visit.

Wat Phra Kaew and the Ramakien murals
Wat Phra Kaew is the royal chapel of the palace and has no resident monks. Along its cloisters runs a series of murals that tell the Thai version of the Ramayana, called the Ramakien. Inside the ordination hall, the paintings cover other subjects, including stories of the Buddha.
Read the full story of the temple on Wat Phra Kaew and the Emerald Buddha. For the dates behind the buildings, the history of the Grand Palace follows the reigns in order.

How to look at the buildings
Start with the roofs
Thai halls are read from the top: layered roofs and spires. Stand back across a courtyard to take in the line before you look at details.
Walk the cloisters
The murals are in the covered walkways around Wat Phra Kaew, out of the direct sun. Move slowly along one section rather than rushing the full circuit.
Come at 08:30
Light and shade are kinder in the morning, and the courtyards are quieter. See opening hours for the times and for the dress code.
Know the limits
The Dusit Maha Prasat is closed for normal sightseeing. Do not take photos inside the main hall of Wat Phra Kaew, and follow the signs.
Grand Palace architecture: frequently asked questions
What is the most famous building in the Grand Palace?
The Chakri Maha Prasat, the main throne hall, with its European-influenced base, Thai roofs and gilded spires. It was built between 1876 and 1882 under King Rama V.
Can I go inside the throne halls?
Plan to see them from outside. The Dusit Maha Prasat is closed for normal sightseeing, and access to the others follows the visitor route of the day.
What are the murals at Wat Phra Kaew about?
The murals in the cloisters tell the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Ramayana epic. Paintings inside the ordination hall deal with other stories, including the life of the Buddha.
Who built the Grand Palace?
King Rama I began it with the move of the capital in 1782. Later reigns added more buildings, so the site reflects several periods rather than one.
Is the Dusit Maha Prasat the same as the Dusit Palace?
No. The Dusit Maha Prasat is a hall inside the Grand Palace. The Dusit Palace is a separate royal residence complex to the north, developed by Rama V toward the end of the 19th century.
Is this the official Grand Palace website?
No. This is an independent guide to the buildings and the visit.
